Irish Researchers leading the way for cardiac defect repairs

NUI Galway researcher is author of paper contributing to the design of an innovative device to close heart defects without placing patients on bypass

Researchers, including four Irish researchers, while based at the Wyss Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Boston Children’s Hospital have jointly designed a fundamentally different way to implant an innovative patch to close a heart tissue defect that eradicates the need to place a patient on bypass. Their work was published recently in Science Translational Medicine, and features as the cover article.
Ellen Roche, PhD and a graduate from the Biomedical Engineering Program at NUI Galway was the first author of the paper. Roche completed the work published in Science Translational Medicineduring her PhD at Harvard University and is a current research fellow at NUI Galway under Professor Peter McHugh, working on a project in Biomedical Engineering in the area of novel cardiac drug delivery device development.

Medical Library Update

Note: Resulting from major damage to the electrical and data infrastructure due to the fire incident at the Clinical Sciences Building on Thursday 17th September, the Medical Library will remain closed until Monday 5th October at the earliest, whilst power and data services are being restored.

In the interim if you need assistance Medical Library staff can be contacted in several ways:

Clinical Sciences Institute Update

Following an initial assessment of the situation at the Clinical Science Institute, there is extensive damage to electrical and data infrastructure in the building, particularly on the ground floor.  As a result, all services /utilities in the building have been shut down. 

The Clinical Science Building will remain closed until Monday, 21st September 2015  at the earliest whilst services are being restored.  An update will be provided when the building has been surveyed.

Introducing Plum Print in CINAHL Complete

The Plum Print is an article-level widget that visually changes based upon the metrics found in each of the five categories of metrics – Usage, Captures, Mentions, Social Media and Citations. These metrics help users to measure the research impact of an article.



Users of CINAHL Complete can hover over the Plum Print to view a brief breakdown of available metrics. They then have the option to click on the “see details” link for more in-depth analytics information.

The metrics found in the Plum Print are continuously updated and cover more than 3,500 of CINAHL Complete’s premier journals and their articles published from 2013 to the present.
