'Instagram for doctors' to be launched in Europe

An app which enables healthcare professionals to share photos is to be rolled out across western Europe by the end of the year.

The app was designed to enable doctors to share pictures of their patients, both with each other and with medical students.
So far, more than 150,000 doctors have uploaded case photos with the patient's identity obscured.
However, some experts have expressed concern about patient confidentiality.
Patients' faces are automatically obscured by the app but users must manually block identifying marks like tattoos.
Each photo is reviewed by moderators before it is added to the database.
Founder Dr Josh Landy told the BBC that the Figure 1 service did not access any patient records.
"We do not possess any personal medical data at all. The best way to keep a secret is not to have it. We are not an organisation that delivers healthcare," he told the BBC.
But doctors must provide identifying credentials and are also advised to notify their employees and patients to find out about consent policies.
The app is already available in North America, the UK and Ireland.
While digital services such as UpToDate and DynaMed - both requiring a subscription - are already widely used within the healthcare community as clinical knowledge databases, they are not rivals to Figure 1, said Dr Landy.
"UpToDate is an app I love, and have used for years. However, they have a highly curated repository of articles written and edited by experts in the field."
"What our app does is provide the opportunity to contribute any case no matter how classic or unusual. Ours is all image-based and totally crowdsourced."

UpToDate Anywhere

Important news from UpToDate:

Through all the changes in medicine, one thing that remains constant is our commitment to improving the quality and effectiveness of healthcare worldwide by improving clinical decisions at the point of care.

This means providing you with access to the answers you need, when you need them. As more and more of you access UpToDate on a mobile device, we've focused on improving the UpToDate mobile experience. To that end, we have begun our global rollout of UpToDate Anywhere, providing institutional UpToDate users with mobile and remote access, and the ability to earn CME credits while you work.

We are on the cusp of releasing an enhanced search and user interface. You'll find search results that are more accurate and easier to navigate, along with a more consistent navigation experience across devices. I hope you and your colleagues will take a moment to review the changes and let us know what you think.

Finally, as I dedicate more and more of my energies to helping UpToDate grow and reach new clinicians around the world, I am pleased to announce that a long-time leader at UpToDate, Dr. Ted Post, will be taking on the role of editor-in-chief. Read more about Ted below.

These are just some of the exciting initiatives underway at UpToDate. .

UpToDate: Enhanced search results

UpToDate® introduces enhanced search results and an improved user interface
Find answers faster than ever with links to the sections and graphics most likely to answer your clinical questions. UpToDate synthesizes data from over 21 million monthly topic views to analyze search terms and information viewed by clinicians. This analysis enables UpToDate to quickly and accurately display relevant sections and graphics for a given search. Navigating UpToDate is even more intuitive with a redesigned user interface that puts key features like Drug Interactions and Practice Changing UpDates on every page.
Enhancements that improve search and usability include:

  • Links to the sections and graphics within a topic that are most likely to answer your clinical question
  • Customizability allows you to collapse the search results to see more results per page; this setting will be saved if you are logged in
  • The topic outline continues to provide a comprehensive overview of all topic sections and graphics
  • Find in Topic now displays your search term immediately upon opening
  • Improved user interface facilitates navigation by grouping items together in sections in the header and footer

Tip: UpToDate® Graphics Search enhances your ability to diagnose and treat

Quickly and easily search an extensive library of high-quality graphics from UpToDate including more than 27,000 pictures, tables, illustrations, diagrams, graphs, algorithms and videos, without using a separate search engine.

After searching a clinical term, select “Graphics” from the menu in the left navigation. For even faster access, select “Graphics” from the dropdown menu in the Search box. With either approach, the resulting graphics appear in thumbnail format. Clicking a thumbnail opens a larger version of the graphic.
Accessing topics with references to graphics

Each graphic references and links to related UpToDate topics under “Appears in Topics.” And from within an UpToDate topic, you can see all corresponding graphics.

Watch a brief video demonstration to learn more about conducting a Graphics Search, sharing information with patients or colleagues, and exporting graphics to a presentation at: www.uptodate.com/home/help-demo.

Analyse drug interactions on UpToDate

UpToDate® includes key drug and drug interaction databases – authoritative point-of-care information that helps minimize risk and increase patient safety.

Analyze drug interactions
UpToDate also provides thorough analysis of drug-drug and herb-drug interactions. Entering a patient’s medications identifies and summarizes potential interactions, along with an easy-to-understand risk rating and patient management steps. Clicking the name of a drug displays a monograph that supplies complete interaction details. Drug interactions are only available through online options; they are not available through UpToDate MobileComplete™ or the downloadable desktop add-on products.
